About WRKZ-FM

WRKZ-FM began its latest lease on life in May 2002, when owner Citadel Communications flipped 102.3 from a simulcast of country WCAT-FM (106.7) to '80s hits as Z102-3. Weeks earlier, Citadel had moved the WRKZ-FM calls from 106.7 to 102.3, after moving the WCAT-FM calls from its 99.9 property in Orange, MA.

Immediately, WRKZ found itself in a firestorm over the hiring of long-time WNNK-FM jock Bruce Bond, fired several months earlier by his former station. WNNK owner Cumulus sought a court order to remove Bond from the airwaves; after several months of legal wrangling, a September decision in the Cumberland County Court of Common Pleas ordered Bond off the airwaves to finish the remaining six months of his non-compete clause. He is scheduled to return to WRKZ's morning show in March 2003.

In December 2002, WRKZ changed course again, shifting from '80s pop to a blend of late '70s and early '80s rock hits, while retaining the Z102-3 moniker.
